Mainland Europe is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. However, that popularity is split between the likes of Germany, the UK, France and Spain. Other countries don’t get a look in, even though they are just as good. Take Switzerland as an example. You have almost definitely heard of it, but have you ever been? Better yet, have you ever considered going? The answer is probably not, yet it is one of the best countries to visit in the whole of Europe. If you don’t believe that, take a look at the following.
#1: Winter Sports
Winter sports don’t come much better than in Switzerland. Of course, the Scandinavian countries are also pretty impressive when it comes to winter sports. Still, Switzerland more than holds its own against these giants. Due to its location in the Alps, the country has some of the best skiing resorts on the planet, never mind in Europe. In fact, there is nothing better than skiing down a black run with the Matterhorn in the background. You won’t find many countries that can boast a variety of runs that range in difficulty like Switzerland.
#2: The Luxury
What do you think when you think of Switzerland? For most people it is luxury. Everything the Swiss do is shrouded in luxury. Everyone knows about the Swiss products that are in the best in the world such as Swiss watches. Well, that permeates throughout the country. Hotels in Switzerland will blow your mind, especially if you go to Bern or Zurich. And, the restaurants and nightlife are also very upper class. That might sound a little pretentious, but the country somehow manages to keep a fine balance. It is worth noting that you have to pay for luxury, but a trip to Switzerland isn’t cheap. Go on then, treat yourself!
#3: The Nightlife
Talking of the nightlife, there aren’t too many better nights out in Europe. The great thing about the Swiss is that they accommodate for every eventuality. If you are looking for a quiet drink, you can find a nice bar tucked up a quiet alley. Or, you can head to a cocktail bar if you want something more vibrant. And, for all of the clubbers, don’t despair because the Swiss take clubbing seriously. In fact, they think that any night that ends before sunrise is a bad night!
#4: The Diversity
One thing about Switzerland is that it changes from city to city. Because it shares borders with Italy, France and Germany, there is a mixture of all cultures. The majority of the locals, for instance, speak German. But, there are pockets of places that speak French and some that speak Italian. The towns and cities also reflect the borders that Switzerland shares. Ticino is a town in the south of the country that is like an old school Italian town from the south. If that doesn’t float your boat, you can go to Lausanne and live like the French.
That is just a taster of what Switzerland has to offer.
